Morgan Freeman Speaks Against Black History Month

Renowned American actor, Morgan Freeman, recently shared his views on the annual event, Black History Month, and the term “African-American,” which has been used to describe black Americans since the 1700s. Freeman expressed his disapproval of Black History Month, stating that the celebration of black cultural achievements for just one month every year is an insult to his heritage. He further expressed his frustration at the idea of reducing an entire heritage to a single set of four weeks.

Additionally, Freeman also questioned the true definition and relevance of the term “African-American.” The actor stated that he does not subscribe to that title. Bblack people have had different titles throughout history, including the use of the n-word. Freeman questioned how such terms gained such a grip on society and further stated that the term “African-American” is used to describe black people who are, in reality, of mixed heritage.

The actor went on to criticize the use of “Africa” as if it is a country. Especially when it is, in fact, a vast and diverse continent, much like Europe. Freeman’s comments have sparked a debate on the use of such terms. As well as the relevance of events such as Black History Month in modern society.

Many have commended Freeman for his bold stance on the issues. However, others have criticized his views. They argue that the celebration of Black History Month and the use of the term “African-American” are essential for recognizing and celebrating the cultural contributions and struggles of black Americans.
