Nigerian singer Naira Marley has made his first public statement following a Magistrate court ruling that cleared him, his aide Sam Larry, and Prime Boy of involvement in the tragic death of former signee Mohbad.
On Tuesday, a Magistrate court sitting in Yaba, Lagos, announced that Naira Marley, Sam Larry, and Prime Boy had no case to answer regarding the death of Mohbad, who passed away on September 12, 2023, under unclear circumstances. Instead, the court directed the prosecution of the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to Mohbad and one of his friends, Ayobami, for reckless and negligent acts.
In response to the ruling, Naira Marley took to his social media platforms, sharing verses from the Quran. One verse emphasized trusting in Allah, stating, “And whoever puts all his trust in Allah, he will be enough for him (65:3).” Another referenced divine justice: “They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.”
This marks Naira Marley’s first public statement since his release from custody on November 17, after being detained for over five weeks following the uproar surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The controversy surrounding Naira Marley began after Mohbad’s death, when a video of Sam Larry assaulting the late singer surfaced online. Public outrage led to widespread condemnation of Naira Marley, his label, and their associates.
In the months following the tragedy, Naira Marley and Sam Larry engaged in several charitable activities to rehabilitate their tarnished image. However, their efforts were overshadowed by allegations and speculations about their involvement in the late singer’s demise.
In March, a viral video showed an Imam forcing Naira Marley and Sam Larry to say “Amen” during a prayer for Mohbad’s killers. The Imam later clarified that the duo had confessed their innocence to him and sought prayers for justice.
With the court’s ruling, Naira Marley has begun to publicly reaffirm his faith and trust in divine justice. While the decision clears his name legally, it remains to be seen whether public perception will shift in his favour.
