Nigerian content creator and singer, Nasboi, has weighed in on the ongoing marital issues between 2baba and Annie Idibia, urging Nigerians to refrain from using celebrity divorces as a measure for defining marriage.
In a Twitter post, Nasboi pointed out how, following every celebrity divorce, people begin to claim that marriage isn’t for them, yet they often overlook the long-lasting unions of their own parents.
He emphasized that marriage is a personal choice, and the breakdown of a celebrity marriage shouldn’t define everyone’s view on the institution. “One celebrity divorce, then you begin to say this thing called marriage is not for me. But you forget your parents, who have been married for over 30 years. Stop using celebrity marriages to define marriage. If you like, don’t marry. Na you sabi,” Nasboi stated.
Nasboi’s reaction comes after 2baba made headlines by announcing his separation from his wife of over a decade, Annie Idibia, via Instagram on Sunday. The announcement sent shockwaves through the public, with 2baba stating that he and Annie had been separated for some time and were headed toward a divorce. However, in a surprising turn, he later claimed that his Instagram account had been hacked, before ultimately sharing videos admitting to the issues in their marriage.
Since the announcement, many celebrities have weighed in. Media personality Toke Makinwa expressed disappointment in 2baba’s actions, pledging support for Annie. BBNaija stars Atang and Khloe Abiri also voiced concern for Annie, with Khloe questioning the timing of the announcement given the backlash Annie had already faced on the Young, Famous & African reality show.
Nigerian celebrity designer Toyin Lawani urged empathy, advising against kicking someone while they’re down and advocating for love and learning. Women’s rights advocate Ifedayo Agoro, known as Diary of a Naija Girl, criticized 2baba’s actions, accusing him of abandoning Annie after she had supported him through difficult times.
Delta State Governor’s aide Ossai Ovie Success also slammed 2baba for being insensitive, particularly given Annie’s recent struggles, including the loss of twins and public scrutiny due to the reality show.
