The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a five-day nationwide warning strike, set to commence on Friday, 12th September 2025, at 8:00 a.m. and conclude on Tuesday, 16th September 2025.

This decision was unanimously reached during NARD’s online National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting, which began on Wednesday, 10th September, and extended into the early hours of Thursday, 11th September 2025.

The strike aims to demand the fulfilment of long-standing grievances, including unpaid salaries, allowances, and critical welfare improvements.

Key issues include the immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, and resolution of outstanding allowances such as the 2024 accoutrement allowance.

Additionally, doctors are protesting the downgrading of West African postgraduate membership certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and poor working conditions, such as power shortages and inadequate remuneration.

Agbor Affiong, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, confirmed the strike in a public statement.

All medical centres have been directed to notify their hospital managements and continue advocating for these demands.

This industrial action coincides with an ongoing seven-day warning strike by resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which began earlier this week.

NARD President, Osundara Zenith, had previously warned that members were prepared to shut down public hospitals due to the government’s failure to address these critical issues.

The strike is expected to disrupt emergency, surgical, diagnostic, and clinical services across public healthcare facilities nationwide, potentially exacerbating the existing strains on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
