The Nigerian Navy has apprehended around 35 ships implicated in oil theft in the country’s waterways.
Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, announced this during a maritime stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ogalla said that the arrested vessels were turned over to the relevant prosecutors.
According to the Naval Chief, the Navy restructured its operations and launched Operation Delta Sanity in January, and it continues to conduct maritime security operations through surveillance, reaction capabilities, and law enforcement, as well as engagement with all stakeholders.
The Naval Chief assured stakeholders that the Nigerian Navy is committed to fulfilling its statutory obligations in order to provide a conducive maritime domain for the nation’s economic success.
He went on to say that the Navy was attempting to make sure that its activities did not impede the operators’ ability to do their tasks and produce optimally.
The Naval Chief said:
“Provision of security is part of ways of increasing promoting ease of doing business, because if there is no security, the operators cannot operate.
“Also ensuring that our arrests and detentions do not impede on the legitimate business operators, we ensure that when we make arrests.”
