NDLEA Bursts Factory Supplying ‘Purple Drink, Weed’ to Cameroon, Chad, Niger

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has discovered a factory in Adamawa which supplies Akuskura psychotropic drugs to Chad, Cameroon and the Republic of Niger.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, Femi Babafemi, the agency’s director of media and advocacy, reported that NDLEA operatives conducted a raid of the Mubi factory on Saturday.

He stated that, during the raid, production activities were ongoing on the premises, and NDLEA operatives intercepted a substantial quantity of the drugs.

He also said agents at the Benue Agency had seized 859 bottles of codeine-based syrup weighing 117.3 kg, abandoned by a suspicious dealer.

The NDLEA spokesperson said that the bottles of cough syrup were abandoned roughly two kilometres from the NDLEA checkpoint along Enugu-Otukpo road last Wednesday.

Furthermore, Babafemi reported that NDLEA operatives arrested two suspects, Kabiru Muhammed (35) and Isah Muhammed (28), on Friday. During the arrest, the operatives found 20 blocks of cannabis, weighing 11.2kg, concealed in a bag of cassava flakes (garri). Kabiru Muhammed and Isah Muhammed attempted to travel along the Zaria-Kano road with drugs.

In another development, the operatives recovered no fewer than seven bags of cannabis weighing 74.5kg when they raided an uncompleted building in Ala town, Akure area of Ondo State.

Babafemi reported that officials recovered 60 kilos of the same substance from one Aminu Mohammed along Ibadan-Oyo road, Oyo State. They had concealed the substance among footwear in two jumbo sacks. Authorities intercepted the suspect as he waited to board a vehicle to Kebbi.

He quoted the Chairman, NDLEA, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa commends the officers and men in Kano, Ondo, Oyo, Benue and Adamawa Commands for their vigilance and professionalism in discharging their responsibilities.

Marwa charged them and their colleagues across the country not to rest on their oars.
