The National Economic Council (NEC) has taken unprecedented initiatives to secure food security and address the nation’s economic issues.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the council has also vowed to make fertiliser available to farmers and to develop Agro-Rangers to address agricultural insecurity.
The decision was made on Thursday during the Council’s 139th virtual meeting, which was headed by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The NEC underlined that fertiliser is a key component of agricultural production, which the government is working to achieve.
To enhance output, the council recommended state governors to adopt contemporary farming methods.
It also examined the deployment of Agro-Rangers in the near term and the formation of state police in the long term to solve farmer security concerns.
This came following a presentation by Sen. Ibrahim Geidam, Minister of Police Affairs.
According to NAN, the government intends to release 42,000 metric tonnes of food goods from the National Strategic Reserve to help alleviate increasing costs.
