A four-day-old baby girl was rescued from a pit latrine within Rioma Catholic Church compound in Marani, Kisii county of Kenya, thanks to the swift response of the National Police Service (NPS). The rescue operation was carried out by police officers from Rioma Police Station after a local alerted them about hearing a baby crying inside the latrine.
The police demolished the pit latrine and retrieved the infant, who was estimated to be four days old. The baby was taken to Marani Level 4 Hospital. Furthermore, she was handed over to the Sub-county Chief Nursing Officer in good health.
The NPS has commended the member of the public who alerted them to the incident. They further pledged to protect children in Kenya through its specialized Child Protection Units. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
