Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government are currently gathering in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, for an emergency conference to discuss the next course of action in response to the coup in the Republic of Niger.
As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is due to preside over the meeting, which begins in a few minutes at the Presidential Villa.
The President of Tchad, Gen Mahamat Kaka, President. Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea-Bissau and Togo. Others are Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma and President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire are among the African leaders that have arrived at the location.
Others include President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, President Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana and President Adama Barrow of The Gambia, among others.
Recall that President Tinubu responded angrily to the political upheaval in the Republic of Niger, warning that ECOWAS would not tolerate coups on the continent?
Soon later, word arrived that the military had effectively seized control in Niger.
