Niger State Government has approved N80,000 as the new minimum wage for government workers at the state and local levels.

Governor Umar Bago made this statement immediately after meeting with organized labour representatives at Government House Minna, where he announced that the new wage system would begin in November.

He said that the decision was reached following extensive discussions between the government team and organized labour.

According to him:

“We have decided to approve the sum of N80,000 as the minimum for both state and local governments. The N80,000 approved is sustainable and we are sure that as our agriculture thrives, we will still upgrade very soon.”

Bago also revealed the state government’s plans to establish civil service farms and urged public servants to begin producing agricultural products.

He said:

“We are creating civil service farms so that our civil servants can be productive and for that, we can even get to one million as the minimum wage but for now, we are starting with N80,000.”

He indicated that the minimum wage will begin in November, “because we have already paid for this month (October).”

In reaction, Abdulkarim Idris Lafene, state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), informed media that N80,000 is not proportional with the existing economy and cost of living.

“We are hoping that the minimum wage will get to one million naira going by what Mr Governor said,” he added.

Recall that on July 29, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the new minimum wage into law after meeting with representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.
