The Nigerian Army leadership has directed its troops across the country to adhere to the rules of engagement placed on them to promote national security.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), announced Major General Nosakhare C. Ugbo, Chief of Civil Military Affairs, at a sensitization workshop organised by the Nigerian Army to strengthen the military-civilian relationship in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State.

Lagbaja emphasised the significance of Army forces deployed for various missions scrupulously adhering to the law to defend human rights and develop civil-military collaboration.

According to him, this will boost the confidence of Nigeria’s good citizens.

He said:

“As you embark on your constitutional responsibilities of dealing with terrorists and other criminals, you must ensure adequate protection of the lives and property of law-abiding civilians, as they would appreciate your professionalism.”

In his remarks, Major General Godwin M. Mutkut, Commanding Officer of the 8 Division and Force Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD), urged social media users to be patriotic citizens while making their posts public.

General Mutkut asked social media users to avoid sharing fake news, unconfirmed allegations of deaths, and places where incidents happened.

“The Nigerian Army needs patriotic citizens as much as they need the interventions of our troops in their communities being ravaged by terrorists and criminals,” he stated.

Invited resource persons to deliver papers at the sensitisation event, educating social media managers on the dangers of broadcasting unconfirmed occurrences that might jeopardise national security and cause unrest in impacted areas.
