Nigeria’s Super Eagles face another setback with Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella withdrawing from the squad ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin. This comes after Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was also sidelined.

The Nigerian Football Federation announced Tella’s withdrawal on Thursday, citing family reasons. In response, Coach Finidi George has called up Ibrahim Olawoyin from Caykur Rizespor to fill the gap left by Tella.

Tella, who played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s recent Bundesliga and German Cup victories, will be missed in these important fixtures. His absence, coupled with Osimhen’s, is a significant blow to the Super Eagles’ campaign. Osimhen, a key player for Nigeria, scored 21 goals in 35 matches for SSC Napoli this season, highlighting his importance to the team.

Despite these setbacks, Nigeria remains focused on securing their first win in the qualifiers. They are set to face South Africa on June 7 and Benin on June 10. The team aims to overcome these challenges and strengthen their position in the World Cup qualifying rounds.

Ibrahim Olawoyin, 26, who has had a commendable season with Rizespor, will be looking to make an impact in his debut for the Super Eagles. His performance in these matches could be crucial in bolstering Nigeria’s squad for future games.

As Nigeria prepares for these vital matches, the team will need to leverage their depth and resilience to achieve their goals. The Super Eagles’ ability to adapt and perform without two of their star players will be tested, but they remain determined to advance in the World Cup qualifiers.
