The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Escravos has successfully deactivated six illegal refining sites located in Obodo Omadino Community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
These operations were carried out as part of the ongoing Operation Delta Sanity II, aimed at curbing crude oil theft and other illegal activities in the Niger Delta region.
Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, the Commanding Officer of FOB Escravos, reported that the first phase of the operation, which began on April 21, led to the discovery and deactivation of two illegal refining sites. The operation recovered approximately 1,900 litres of stolen crude oil, stored in two ovens and 10 dug-out pits.
A second operation, conducted on May 4, resulted in the deactivation of two more illegal refining sites in the same area. This operation seized around 3,710 litres of stolen crude oil and 330 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), stored in 11 dug-out pits and five polythene sacks.
The third phase of the operation, carried out on May 11, uncovered and destroyed two additional illegal refining sites. These sites contained an estimated 3,050 litres of stolen crude oil and 675 litres of illegally refined AGO, stored in an oven, seven dug-out pits, and nine polythene sacks.
The total haul from the three operations amounted to approximately 8,660 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,005 litres of illegally refined AGO.
The Nigerian Navy has expressed its commitment to continue combating oil theft and other forms of economic sabotage, with Captain Okoloagu warning perpetrators to cease these illegal activities. The operations are in line with directives from the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to ensure the security of Nigeria’s territorial waters.
