The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally petitioned numerous foreign embassies and international bodies within Nigeria, urgently seeking their intervention regarding his continued detention by the Nigerian government.

In the petition, Kanu calls upon these international representatives to pressure the Nigerian state to uphold constitutional supremacy and respect the principles of “stare decisis” and the rule of law throughout his ongoing legal proceedings.

The extensive list of recipients includes the embassies of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Kenya, South Africa, Israel, Japan, and several European nations such as Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and Austria.

The appeal was also directed toward supranational organisations, including the European Union, the ECOWAS Court, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross.

The document, signed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, implores these bodies to compel the Nigerian government to adhere to its own laws. It specifically references the Court of Appeal’s earlier ruling that discharged Kanu, arguing that the Supreme Court’s subsequent reversal and the Court of Appeal’s own stay of execution represent a severe undermining of the rule of law and constitutional order.

The petition outlines several specific requests for relief. These include demanding that Nigeria enforce the Court of Appeal’s discharge ruling from October 2022, thereby nullifying his current detention and securing his immediate release.

It further asks the international community to condemn what it describes as judicial lawlessness, hold the United Kingdom accountable for perceived inaction, and escalate the matter to international courts if Nigeria refuses to comply. The appeal concludes with a grave warning that urgent intervention is critical to halt his persecution and prevent a potential tragedy in custody.
