NNPCL, Dangote rift probe: Bribery allegations unsettle Reps

Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Monday, fired a powerful ad hoc committee investigating NNPC Limited on Monday, following weeks of infighting among its members.

In recent weeks, the House has been divided between lawmakers who favour NNPC Limited’s Group Managing Director, Mele Kyari, and those who oppose him, prompting the leadership to act.

The joint committee, co-chaired by Ikenga Ugochinyere and Henry Okojie, has grown in authority as a result of the House’s job assignments.

Worse, the committee became tarnished by suspicions of inducement prior to the formation of the House’s standing committees.

Until its abrupt disbandment, the Committee was looking into the suspected importation of contaminated petroleum products, the acquisition of Oando’s assets by NNPC Retail, the disagreement between Dangote Refinery and NNPC Limited, and other concerns.

However, the burden of investigating NNPC Limited became the Committee’s Waterloo, with many MPs siding with Mele Kyari.

“The Dangote vs NNPCL probe gave the committee so much power,” claimed a lawmaker who declined to comment on the record.
