Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu recently shared a deeply emotional account of the loss of her husband and the struggles she faced during his illness in an interview with Biola Bayo.
Regina revealed that her youngest child was just four months old when her husband passed away after a long battle with a deadly sickness that drained his finances and eventually took his life.
Chukwu recounted the heart-wrenching experience of caring for her ailing husband, who was described by many as a “living corpse” due to his deteriorating health. She shared the moment her husband, overwhelmed by pain, asked her to beg his mother for mercy death — an injection to end his suffering.
Reflecting on her past, Regina revealed she was a virgin when she met her husband and that he was the first person to truly love her despite her stubborn nature.
“My last child was four months old when their mother died. It’s a story that, anytime I try to explain, I cry…
The night that we did our traditional wedding, my husband confided in me that all the money he had at home and abroad was eleven thousand naira. That night, I cried because I felt like where were we going to start?
Things were very hard for us; I couldn’t even register for ante-natal care. At some point, I couldn’t stand again. After 41 days of welcoming my child, I returned to work because my husband couldn’t go out. He was already using the potty at home. Anyone who saw him called him a living corpse.
He told me to help him beg his mother to give him mercy death.”
Regina revealed that the ordeal forced her to pause her acting career for almost eight years as she focused on caring for her husband and raising their children. However, she is now back in the industry, resilient and determined.
In March, while celebrating her birthday, Regina counted her blessings despite the hardships, emphasizing her continuous grind as a widow and single mother.
In December 2023, Regina joyfully announced she had acquired a new house for herself and her children. She shared how difficult life had been as a single mother, recounting how she had to move into her father’s house and live in the same room with many siblings and parents. But with faith and perseverance, her story changed, and God blessed her family with their own home.
Also in 2023, Regina expressed pride in being a mother and said her late husband would be proud of the woman and mother she has become. She hinted at sharing more of her life stories in the future, possibly through a movie.
