Nollywood actress Sonia Ogiri has taken to her Instagram story to express her concerns about the timing of Nigerian celebrities’ responses to pressing issues, particularly the recent increase in food prices.
In her candid remarks, she questioned whether celebrities were genuinely empathizing with the masses or merely joining the conversation when situations escalated.
Lamenting the challenging state of the economy, Sonia Ogiri wondered why some celebrities chose to remain silent on critical matters until they reached a critical point. She raised the question of whether their current expressions of concern were authentic or simply a form of posturing.
Her Instagram story read,
I laugh in Swahili. Why are some celebrities speaking up now about the hike in foodstuff? Una dey whine una sef or just complaining so ordinary Nigeria go think. Say you dey feel wetin them dey feel? Why do some Nigerian celebrities keep mute when they’re supposed to speak up at the right time before things become bad? Why medicine after death? Stop deceiving the poor Nigerians with the narrative of you’re also suffering hardship. Things are so hard in Nigeria for common Nigerians.”
Sonia Ogiri’s call for timely and genuine expressions of concern suggests a desire for more proactive engagement from public figures, encouraging them to speak out before situations escalate.
