After a two-week hiatus, National Assembly members will return to Abuja, and President Bola Tinubu’s tax bills appear to be their top priority.
The four tax reform bills are currently before the National Assembly.
However, the discussion over them appears to be divided between the North and the South.
The four tax bills, the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, are now before both houses of the National Assembly for approval.
The tax invoices sparked a lot of commotion over the weekend when Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, or NNPP, called them a scheme by Lagos State to seize Kano’s money and urged Kano lawmakers to “open their eyes.”
The most recent politician from the north to express concern about the bill is Kwankwaso.
Recall that their legislators were told to reject the proposals by the Northern Governors’ Forum.
The Walue-Added Tax sharing that the bills propose is the source of controversy.
The idea of using the derivation principle to split 60% of VAT revenue is causing debate.
The arrangement would benefit Lagos State, which is home to several corporate headquarters, according to some northern governors.
