President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) regime is gradually coming to an end. Details are emerging about his achievements in the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS). The initiative was aimed at reducing poverty across Nigeria.
In less than a year, the NPRGS commission’s decision to take a different approach based on smart strategies has impacted millions of Nigerians across different sectors. Whether or not the impact is positive, is a different matter entirely. The Commission will be chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Mr Laolu Akande, the spokesman to the vice president, confirmed the development in a media update, saying that-
“almost two million vulnerable Nigerians have been impacted by various projects implemented by the NPRGS Committee for the year 2022 in agriculture, rural roads construction and skills and vocational training”.
Professor Osinbajo speaking on the efficiency of the Committee in a meeting with committee members, the VP had previously said –
“How the Buhari administration plans to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years will not be based on a business-as-usual approach, but a very simple, common-sense strategy that will deliver the results as the President promised”.
He explained that the approach taken by the Commission had made significant progress in a very short period of time.
It was also reported that 1.6 million smallholder farmers were affected by the Agriculture for Jobs Plan. Furthermore,13,000 young people in six states including Lagos, Ogun, Enugu, Gombe, Nasarawa and Kaduna were trained through technical and vocational education and training programs.
Akande also added that an agreement is underway to provide similar training to 2,000 beneficiaries in Edo state.
According to the NPRGS implementation monitoring update published by Akande, some of the programmes that have achieved 100% completed programmes for the 2022 cycle include, the Agriculture for Food and Jobs Plan and Construction of Rural Roads, among others.
