The Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has expressed serious concerns over the increasing dangers posed by asymmetric warfare and various criminal activities across Nigeria.
Speaking during an operational visit to the Abia State Command headquarters in Umuahia on Wednesday, Audi highlighted the range of security challenges facing the nation, from illegal oil bunkering to the destruction of critical national assets and infrastructure.
Audi emphasised that these acts of economic sabotage, if not properly addressed, could severely damage Nigeria’s economy, including negative impacts on the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
The visit was part of his assessment tour of the Southeast region to evaluate the performance of NSCDC personnel in tackling these security threats.
Reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of protecting national infrastructure, the Commandant General assured that the NSCDC would continue to intensify efforts to combat these criminal activities.
He stressed the importance of proactive measures to safeguard oil installations, power facilities, and other vital assets that are frequently targeted by vandals and economic saboteurs.
The security chief’s warning comes amid growing concerns about the sophistication of criminal networks engaged in oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other forms of infrastructure sabotage.
Audi called for increased collaboration between security agencies and local communities to effectively address these security challenges and protect Nigeria’s economic interests.
During the tour, the Commandant General also reviewed operational strategies with field officers and encouraged personnel to remain vigilant in their duties of securing critical national assets across the Southeast region and beyond.
