The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has officially confirmed the initiation of a comprehensive investigation into a train derailment that occurred on the Abuja-Kaduna route.
The incident took place at approximately 11:09 am on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at kilometre 49, located between the Kubwa Station in the Federal Capital Territory and the Asham Station.
According to the Bureau’s statement, six individuals sustained injuries in the accident. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported.
The NSIB has mobilised its resources to determine the precise cause of the derailment and to formulate recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
The Director-General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed the agency’s sympathy for those affected by the incident.
He emphasised the Bureau’s commitment to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the root cause of the accident. Captain Badeh reaffirmed the NSIB’s overarching mission to enhance the safety and reliability of rail transport across Nigeria through diligent and independent investigative processes.
Further elaborating on the response, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, provided additional details. She confirmed that a specialised “go-team” of investigators had been immediately dispatched to the accident site.
This team is tasked with collecting evidence, engaging with all relevant stakeholders, and conducting a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the derailment.
