In a devastating incident, Salako Treasure, a 100-level student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has reportedly taken her own life by consuming a substance suspected to be a sniper. The lifeless body of the Entrepreneurship Department student was discovered on Wednesday, June 14, inside an uncompleted building in the Lagere area of the town, with a bottle of sniper found nearby, according to Vanguard reports.
Investigations have revealed that Treasure had been experiencing emotional trauma.
This had been made known to some of her friends and acquaintances, prior to the tragic incident. The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of such a promising young lady under such distressing circumstances. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to be vigilant and supportive of one another. He further urged friends and acquaintances to take note of any signs of emotional distress. They can also seek appropriate help for those in need.
While the incident occurred outside the university campus, the administration, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire, is deeply saddened by the loss of a student at such a tender age. Olarewaju called on individuals to be mindful of the challenges life presents. He also emphasized the importance of seeking assistance from trusted sources during times of emotional, psychological, and academic frustrations. He extended heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family and urged the community to come together during this difficult time.
The Osun Police Command has confirmed the incident. Spokesperson Yemisi Opalola revealed that the body has been evacuated and deposited at the University Teaching Hospital. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Treasure’s tragic death is ongoing. Authorities continue to seek to uncover more details.
