Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2024, in an effort to combat consumer extortion, disputes, and other unfair business practices.

The bill is named “HB No. 013/OG/2021- A bill for a law to establish the Ogun State Consumer Protection Agency, provide for the protection of consumers’ interests, settle consumer disputes, and for connected purposes.”

The measure was passed after the Sponsor, Lukman Adeleye, presented the Committee on Industry, Trade, and Investments’ report before a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, on Thursday at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Adeleye then moved to adopt the report, which was seconded by Babatunde Tella and approved by other MPs via voice vote.

The bill was later read and adopted clause by clause before the Committee of the Whole House, after which the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, moved for its third reading, which was seconded by Dickson Awolaja, while the Clerk of the House and Head of Legislative Services, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, presided over the bill’s third reading before lawmakers.

Responding, Speaker Elemide requested that a clean copy of the law be given to State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his approval.

In another development, the Speaker announced the appointment of three new Deputy Clerks in consonance with the provisions of the House of Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Law.

According to Elemide, Deputy Clerk I, Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi would oversee Planning, Training and Legal Services, while Deputy Clerk II- Mr. Temitope Hokon, would be in charge of Legislative Services, Information and Public Service, just as Deputy Clerk III-Mr. Fatai Ayodeji is to head Administration, Finance and Supplies.
