Heavy rainfall has ravaged some parts of Ilaro, Ogun State, affecting several residents and Federal Polytechnic students. As a result of the rain that began on Friday and continued through Saturday, the residents in the Gbogidi, Double Crown, Odo Fufu, and surrounding had their rooms flooded and their properties soaked.

A bridge collapse nearby was also rumoured to have been trapping a car in the canal.

Those impacted by the storm are still draining water out of their homes as of Sunday morning, according to information obtained by a DAILY POST journalist, even as renters consider moving to safer locations.

Gbenga Ekunola, an Ilaro native, claimed that he had presented the issue of the destroyed bridge before Olamilekan Adeola, the senator for Ogun West.

He stated, “Senator Adeola immediately called his team to go to the said spot to assess the situation for immediate intervention”.

Ilaro, a frequent inclusion on the government’s list of potential flood zones, faces ongoing recommendations for residents to relocate. In response, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Dr. Mukail Aremu, has urged employees and students to avoid flood-prone areas. Following heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, Aremu conducted an evaluation of student-populated regions and issued a warning against seeking housing in locations like Riverside, expressing sympathy for the losses caused by the tragedy.

He said, “Those presently in such areas should relocate to safer places.”

According to the rector, the advice became crucial due to warnings about expected severe rains in the coming months, as forecasted by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

He urged the appropriate federal and state government authorities in charge of disaster aid to assist the institution’s impacted students and personnel.
