Health professionals and stakeholders have emphasised the critical need for early childcare, timely immunisation, and strong community engagement to safeguard children’s health in Ogun State and across Nigeria.

The call was made during the quarterly Social and Behavioural Change (SBC) Committee meeting, organised by the Ogun State Ministry of Information and Strategy in collaboration with UNICEF.

Held in Abeokuta, the meeting brought together government officials, civil society organisations, media representatives, and development partners to discuss strategies for improving child welfare.

The SBC Committee, also known as S-SOMTEC, promotes evidence-based interventions to address key child rights issues through multi-sectoral collaboration.

Michael Oyediji, UNICEF Social and Behavioural Change Specialist, highlighted the persistent threat of preventable childhood diseases such as polio and measles, stressing that neglecting vaccinations and hygiene practices puts children at risk. “Public health education and proper hygiene are essential in preventing infections and ensuring child survival,” he said.

Oyediji also urged pregnant women to attend at least four antenatal care visits to enable early detection of health complications, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. The committee aims to drive positive behavioural change by addressing barriers that hinder children’s well-being, including poor healthcare access, misinformation, and cultural practices.

By prioritising early childcare, immunisation, and maternal health, stakeholders hope to improve health outcomes and secure a brighter future for Nigeria’s children.
