The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has announced the apprehension and subsequent sanctioning of 128 residents and 20 corporate entities for various environmental offences related to the indiscriminate disposal of waste.
The individuals were convicted and sentenced to perform mandatory community service across several locations, including Sango-Ota, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, Papalanto, and the state capital, Abeokuta.
According to the agency, the residents were caught in the act of illegally dumping refuse on road medians and other public spaces.
The companies faced penalties after their waste collection trucks were intercepted disposing of garbage along road verges on major highways such as the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Abeokuta expressways.
The Managing Director of OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye, revealed that the offenders were arrested by the authority’s dedicated Enforcement Squad during routine monitoring operations.
Hunye expressed deep concern over the deliberate nature of the violations, stating that those apprehended had consciously chosen to bypass government-approved waste collectors operating within their communities and business premises.
He condemned this behaviour as a direct sabotage of the state government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
He further emphasised that such acts constitute an affront to lawful government directives and pose a significant risk to public health and safety, undermining the efforts of law-abiding citizens who adhere to proper waste management practices.
The Managing Director assured the public that the enforcement team would remain vigilant, particularly during the ongoing rainy season.
The initiative aims to curb practices that contribute to flooding and the contamination of underground water sources, reaffirming the government’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and safer living environment for all residents of Ogun State.
