To boost agricultural productivity and food security, the Ogun State Government has distributed 11,000 free cash crop seedlings to farmers in Yewa North Local Government Area.
The initiative, led by the state’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, aims to improve both local consumption and the potential for agricultural exports.
The seedlings include over 6,000 cashew, 3,000 cocoa, and 2,000 oil palm varieties. Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Bolu Owotomo, highlighted the importance of supporting traditional farmers in the state.
He emphasised that agriculture remains a key component of the administration’s strategy to achieve food self-sufficiency and economic growth.
Speaking during the official flag-off of the distribution, held at the Adokun Royal Hotel Field in Igan-Okoto, Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing necessary resources for farmers.
He also announced that, in collaboration with the local government, an additional 60,000 cash crop seedlings would be distributed in the upcoming planting season. Plans to assist farmers with land clearing were also outlined.
Chairman of Yewa North Local Government, Olusola Akinbode, expressed appreciation to the state government for its continuous support of agricultural development.
He mentioned that the program is designed to uplift smallholder farmers by ensuring each household plants at least 20 cash crop trees to promote long-term sustainability.
The event attracted several notable personalities, including former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly Suraj Adekunbi, Iyaloja General of Ogun State Yemisi Abass, elder statesmen Pa Olu Agemo and Bisiriyu Popoola, and traditional leaders. This initiative is part of the broader vision to strengthen the agricultural sector and enhance food supply across the state.
