Veteran Yoruba actor Olaiya Igwe has opened up about one of the most painful regrets of his life—disappointing gospel singer Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji Alabi, on their wedding day.
In a candid interview with Baba Ibe TV, Olaiya recounted the incident, revealing how his fear of losing his newly purchased Mercedes-Benz V-Boot caused him to back out of a promise he had made to the couple.
The actor explained that after a traumatic robbery incident in Ibadan, where his car was stolen and later recovered, he became paranoid. When Tope Alabi approached him to use the car for her wedding, he initially agreed. However, his fears got the better of him, and he ultimately ignored her calls and withheld the car, leaving the couple stranded on their big day.
What hurt me most and still hurts me is what I did to my younger sister, singer Tope Alabi,” he admitted. “She informed me about her wedding, and I had just bought a car, ‘V Boot,’ at that time. But after experiencing a robbery in Ibadan, I became scared. I stopped picking up her calls a day before the wedding and didn’t give her the car. I disappointed Tope Alabi.”
The veteran actor confessed that while he has sought her forgiveness, he continues to feel guilt, especially now that Tope Alabi owns numerous luxury cars while he struggles to afford one.
She now has countless luxury cars, some of which I cannot afford. My greatest regret is disappointing Tope Alabi,” he concluded.
This revelation isn’t the first time Tope Alabi’s relationships with colleagues have made headlines. Early last year, actor Yemi My Lover opened up about his strained relationship with the gospel singer, recalling how her mother had entrusted her in his care. Despite their history, their relationship has remained distant over the years.
