Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli is celebrating a major milestone with her 2019 film Last Year Single, which continues to make waves on Netflix.

Taking to Instagram, Omoni shared her excitement as the movie remains the number one show on Netflix Nigeria, even years after its release.

Expressing her pride in the film’s continued success, Omoni described it as no small feat, especially considering the tough competition, including the globally popular Prison Break, which was also a top 10 hit in other countries.

“Still the number one show on Netflix in Nigeria!!! Listen, this is no mean feat! Prison Break couldn’t break us, even though it was top 10 in other countries. So thankful for you guys keeping us on top as we enter the 3rd week!”

Omoni also teased fans with a big question: “What does Afua @bimboademoye really want?!!!” while sharing her empathy for Tamtam @iamtonitones, the character who seems to know what she wants but struggles to achieve it.

Encouraging those who haven’t seen the film, Omoni wrote, “If you haven’t watched Last Year Single on Netflix, take this as your sign to go watch it! You will see yourself or your friends in one of the characters—whether it’s a past experience or a current reality. You will learn a lot too! It’s fun, flirty, chaotic, and sexy.”

Female filmmakers in Nollywood are experiencing a golden era, with several achieving remarkable feats this year. Just days ago, actress Wumi Toriola celebrated her movie hitting 4 million views on YouTube in just a month, calling it a big deal and praising her cast, crew, and fans.

Earlier this year, Funke Akindele made history as the first Nigerian filmmaker to gross over a billion Naira at the box office, with her film A Tr!be Called Judah bringing in over N1.4 billion. Funke’s string of successes, including Battle On Buka Street and Omo Ghetto The Saga, solidifies her as one of Nollywood’s most successful filmmakers.

Actress Mercy Aigbe also made her mark in cinema with her debut production Ada Omo Daddy, which grossed N180.7 million, becoming the 3rd highest-grossing Nollywood movie, despite tough competition from industry heavyweights like Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham.

With so many female filmmakers achieving extraordinary milestones, 2024 continues to shine as a powerful year for women in Nollywood.
