In the upcoming 2023 CAF Awards, Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala headlines the race for the Women’s Player of the Year. The Barcelona Femeni forward, who clinched the prestigious award for a record fifth time in 2022, aims to extend her dominance by securing a historic sixth win. Oshoala played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s triumph in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last season and contributed a goal during Nigeria’s campaign in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Competing against Oshoala for the coveted title are South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda. Kgatlana, a previous winner in 2018, currently plays for Racing Louisville Football Club in the United States, adding to the intense competition.
In addition to the Women’s Player of the Year category, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie is nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, while Falcons player Deborah Abiodun is in contention for Young Women’s Player of the Year. The Super Falcons collectively vie for the National Team of the Year title.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 11, at the Palais des Congrès, Movenpick, Marrakech, Morocco. Oshoala’s pursuit of another accolade adds excitement to an evening celebrating the outstanding achievements of African football talent.
