The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, a public holiday to mark the annual Isese Day, a traditional festival celebrated by practitioners of the Yoruba traditional religion.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdulrasheed Aderibigbe, in a statement released in Osogbo.
According to the commissioner, the public holiday is intended to allow traditional worshippers across the state to fully participate in the annual celebrations.
The statement highlighted that Governor Ademola Adeleke, while extending his felicitations to adherents of traditional religion, recognises and honours the cultural heritage and traditions of the people. The governor emphasised the importance of promoting cultural awareness and unity throughout the state.
Governor Adeleke conveyed his best wishes to traditional religion worshippers for a joyful and memorable festival. He also urged all residents, particularly those who practice traditional religions, to celebrate peacefully, abide by the law, and maintain mutual respect during the festivities.
Isese Day is an annual cultural and religious observance primarily held in South-West Nigeria, dedicated to honouring Yoruba deities and Orisha while preserving the rich heritage and customs of the Yoruba people.
The tradition of declaring a public holiday for the festival in Osun State began in August 2014 under the administration of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola. Since then, several other states, including Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo, have officially recognised August 20 as Isese Day, typically declaring it a work-free day for public servants to enable participation in the cultural celebrations.
