The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has disclosed that more than 30,000 cases of gender-based violence were reported across Nigeria between 2021 and 2025.
This alarming figure was revealed during a national dialogue on ending violence against women and girls, organised to mark the start of this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
The minister expressed deep concern over the persistent prevalence of violence against women and girls despite government interventions.
She noted that the reported cases represent only a fraction of actual incidents, as many victims still suffer in silence due to fear of stigma, lack of awareness about reporting channels, or distrust in the justice system.
Domestic violence, sexual assault, child marriage, and harmful traditional practices were identified as the most common forms of gender-based violence documented during this period.
Government efforts to address the crisis include strengthening legal frameworks, establishing more specialised courts for GBV cases, and setting up shelters for survivors. The ministry has also intensified collaboration with civil society organisations to improve awareness campaigns and provide psychosocial support for victims.
The minister called for stronger community involvement in preventing violence, urging traditional and religious leaders to speak out against harmful practices.
She emphasised the need for improved data collection to better understand the scope of the problem and measure the impact of interventions.
While acknowledging progress in breaking the culture of silence around GBV, the minister stressed that much work remains to create a society where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination. She appealed to all stakeholders to redouble efforts in protecting women’s rights and ensuring perpetrators face justice.
