Tomi Coker, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, has announced that about 30,350 people in the state are undergoing HIV treatment, with minors accounting for 2% of the total.
This was disclosed by the commissioner during a news conference held on Monday in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, to commemorate World AIDS Day.
She stated that the workshop, titled “Take the Right Path: Sustain HIV Response, Stop HIV among Children in Ogun State, Nigeria,” highlights the critical need to focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission and ensuring that children living with HIV have access to the care and treatment they require.
According to the commissioner, there was a need for widespread support and encouragement of healthy behaviours, such as condom use, as well as making testing services more accessible.
Coker said:
“Achieving our goals requires sustaining the momentum of our HIV response. A comprehensive approach involving prevention, testing, treatment, and support services is critical.
“Prevention efforts must include widespread education, the promotion of safe practices such as condom use, and ensuring access to testing services.”
