Dr. Tom FredFish, Chairman of the PDP Advocate for Peace and Justice (PAPaJ), has expressed optimism about the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) resurgence in Akwa Ibom State despite recent defections, including that of Governor Umo Eno and 24 state lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June 2025.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo on Monday, August 4, FredFish emphasised that committed members have initiated a rebuilding process to restore the party’s former strength, though he cautioned that success hinges on resolving internal conflicts and purging “bad eggs” who undermine its ideals.
FredFish, a staunch PDP chieftain, acknowledged the disappointment over Eno’s defection but insisted the party has moved on, focusing on its core of “people of integrity” capable of reconstruction. He projected a strong future for the PDP in Akwa Ibom if executed strategically, citing its enduring grassroots structure.
He also urged the party’s Board of Trustees to legally challenge defecting governors, arguing that Nigeria’s constitution did not anticipate such cross-carpeting after elections.
The PAPaJ chairman reserved sharp criticism for Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, demanding his immediate expulsion from the PDP. FredFish likened Wike to a “cankerworm” intent on destroying the party, referencing his alleged anti-PDP rhetoric and actions, including orchestrating defections in Rivers State.
“He’s not a party man but an agent of destruction,” FredFish asserted, questioning why PDP leadership has tolerated Wike’s continued membership despite his alignment with the APC.
The remarks underscore deepening fractures within the PDP, now grappling with defections, leadership disputes, and a struggle to reclaim its opposition footing ahead of 2027. FredFish’s call for legal and disciplinary measures reflects broader tensions as the party seeks to stabilise its ranks and counter the APC’s encroachment in its traditional strongholds.
