job Description
The Pediatric intensivist is a member of the senior medical team and coordinates specialized care for post-neonatal pediatric patients with critical illnesses. Provides leadership and guidance in establishing the highest standards of care and ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices.
Responsibilities
Clinical
· Responsible for the clinical care of critically ill children admitted to PICU according to generally accepted standards.
· Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures.
· Basic and Advanced Pediatric Life Support abilities.
· Respiratory support, non-invasive and invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation management.
· Hands-on experience in the management of various pediatric critical care patients, including Neurological Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Heart Failure, and judicious use of inotropes
· Possess general medical knowledge and an understanding of how treatments affect different developmental growth stages
· Should be updated on the latest breakthroughs in the field of Pediatrics Intensive Care.
· Maintain detailed reports on each child and also report on their progress
· Coordinate with any other specialist that might be managing the patient
· Give medicines that are compatible with other medicines the patient prefers
· Advice patients on any alternative treatment they might be seeking
- To support other aspects of the hospital that may need input from the critical care team.
Academics
• Keeping abreast of the latest medical information through continuous education, formal education, and personal professional development.
• Managing junior staff in the performance of their clinical duties
• Facilitating and making clinical & non-clinical presentations at hospital clinical meetings as assigned
• Observing and staying up-to-date with the laws and statutory codes of medical practice
Administrative
• Participating in the design and formulation of unit policies, SOPs, and clinical pathways
• Performing other applicable tasks and duties as assigned by the Clinical Director.
• Membership of hospital committee as assigned
• Abiding by the hospital rules, protocols, and standard practices.
Requisite Education, Experience, and formal training
i. Basic medical training
ii. Residency training and Specialty Fellowship in Pediatrics of either the West African College of Physicians (WACP) and/or the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN);
OR
Equivalent fellowship from recognized and accredited institutions in a country where a license to practice in Nigeria may be obtained,
iii. Relevant certifications in BLS, PALS/APLS
iv. Post Fellowship Pediatric Intensive Care Specialty certification or Knowledge or experience
OR
Rotation in Pediatric Intensive Care during residency lasting at least 6 months with an interest in building on learning already acquired
v. Registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria with a valid practice license
