Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, one-half of the famous music duo Psquare, has subtly thrown shade at his family while sending a message to the public about mental health and personal boundaries.
In a recent Instagram story, Peter shared his experience and emphasized the importance of not letting family become the reason for one’s suffering in silence. Reflecting on his own journey, he revealed that he had endured this for over 20 years, a period that cost him dearly.
Peter wrote,
Don’t let family be the reason you’re drowning in silence. I did – for over 20 years plus. And it almost cost me everything. But now I know better – love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family doesn’t steal from you.”
The award-winning singer continued to express his frustration, stating that a family that steals from you or breaks you is not truly family. He further emphasized that real family should not drain you, shame you, or ignore your pain.
My sanity matters. My mental health is a priority. If it costs my mental health, then it’s too expensive,” Peter added, signaling the importance of self-care and setting boundaries.
Peter’s message comes amidst ongoing tensions with his family. In 2023, Psquare experienced another fallout, this time over joint funds allegedly being misappropriated by their older brother, Jude Okoye.
During an interview, Peter’s twin brother, Paul, recounted how Peter had gotten him and their older brother, Jude, arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in December 2023. Paul was later cleared of all allegations.
Peter, however, denied these claims, stating that Paul had chosen to align with their older brother, Jude, rather than working with him to regain their place at the top of the music industry. Peter expressed that this led to his marginalization and humiliation.
