The Plateau State House of Assembly has pledged to work closely with the Nigerian military to tackle the recurring attacks and killings that have plagued the state for years.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil led a delegation of lawmakers to the headquarters of the 3 Armoured Division in Jos on Tuesday, where they met with Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH).
The visit followed a resolution by the Assembly after a motion of urgent public importance was moved by Hon. Dachung Danyam Musa, representing Riyom Constituency, in response to recent attacks in Bindi and Tahoss communities.
Speaker Gapyil emphasised the legislature’s commitment to engaging directly with security agencies to understand their challenges and jointly develop strategies to end the violence. “We desire to restore trust and confidence in our people. We must collaborate across all sectors to ensure the safety of lives and property,” he stated.
Major General Oyinlola reassured the lawmakers of the military’s neutrality and dedication to maintaining peace in Plateau State.
He recounted the difficulties faced by troops during the Bindi and Tahoss attacks, where assailants launched coordinated assaults from multiple directions, complicating defence efforts. Despite these challenges, he affirmed the military’s resolve to protect citizens under the people-centred approach of Operation SAFE HAVEN.
The GOC called for stronger community engagement, urging the Assembly to work with traditional leaders, youth groups, and local vigilantes to enhance grassroots security.
He stressed the importance of public cooperation, noting that while the military remains committed to its mandate, success depends on collective efforts.
The Assembly’s move underscores growing efforts to address Plateau’s security crisis through legislative-military partnership, with hopes of restoring lasting peace to the affected communities.
