The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the country’s recent epidemic of jungle justice, warning about the ramifications for criminal justice administration, the rule of law, and worldwide reputation.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer, denounced the country’s jungle justice tendency in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, calling it terrible and barbaric.

Adejobi stated that the conduct resulted in the terrible loss of life and devastation of property across the country.

According to the Police, the callous conduct was a betrayal of justice and due process, undermining the rule of law, as well as the fundamental norms and objectives of human rights.

He further explained that the Nigeria Police Force condemned the conduct of arson in some sections of the country.

According to the Force PRO, the act resulted in the deaths of certain detainees in police custody, as well as the burning of police barracks, patrol vehicles, and the Divisional Police Station in Edo.

Adejobi stated that in the aforementioned instance, the people claimed that the police were attempting to corrupt justice by arresting certain suspected kidnappers and armed robbers accused of terrorizing the town.

He said

“The main suspect was arrested and almost lynched by some community members before he was rescued by the police and his arrest led to the arrest of three additional suspects.”

“The rescue and detention of the suspects did not go down well with some members of the community, who later mobilised in large numbers.

“They attacked the police station, killed the suspects by burning them and the station as well as properties therein.”
