Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to implement semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) next season, following the footsteps of the Champions League and Serie A.This system, already in use at major international tournaments, aims to streamline VAR checks for offside decisions, reducing the average review time by 30 seconds.

The decision came during a meeting of top-flight teams, with the technology set to be operational after one of the autumn international breaks, potentially as early as September. The league, however, has not disclosed the technology partner yet.

SAOT utilizes optical player tracking to swiftly establish the virtual offside line, ensuring quicker and more consistent decisions. This advancement promises an enhanced experience for both stadium attendees and television viewers.

With SAOT’s introduction, the Premier League seeks to address criticisms of VAR, particularly concerning errors and lengthy delays. The move signifies a significant step forward in modernizing officiating and ensuring fair play in football.
