Prince Harry has accused the royal family of withholding information from him about a phone hack. Basically, they did not want him to bring a claim that would “open a can of worms“. He is currently taking Associated News, the publisher of The Daily Mail, to court. Alongside other claimants including Sir Elton John. He is accusing the publisher of privacy breaches such as phone tapping and bugging people’s homes.
In a witness statement submitted before his civil claim, Prince Harry said he was conditioned to accept the family’s rule of “never complain, never explain“. This is especially true when dealing with the press. He added that he became aware of his claim in 2018. He further claimed that the institution was withholding information about phone hacking from him.
Actress Elizabeth Hurley and Baroness Doreen Lawrence also provided witness statements. Hurley claimed private investigators working for Associated News used cassette recorders to tap people’s phones. On the second day of the preliminary hearing, Associated News argued that documents being used by lawyers representing Prince Harry and his co-claimants are confidential.
A High Court judge has expressed concern over who is responsible for policing confidentiality undertakings made during the Leveson Inquiry, as the inquiry no longer exists.
