The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has invited several top officials, including all DCs, CID, and Heads of Investigation Units, to discuss the status of younger protesters regarded as minors who were recently detained and charged to court.
The young children’s arraignment in the Federal High Court on Friday sparked a worldwide uproar.
The minors, who were charged with treason, appeared famished in court three months after being detained during the August hunger strike.
Following outrage from various parties, the IGP ordered an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the minors’ care and well-being while in police custody facilities.
After receiving the investigative report Monday in Glasgow, where the IGP is now attending the Interpol General Assembly, he committed to properly review it and take appropriate action.
The IGP’s most recent decision was announced in a statement made on Monday night by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
According to Adejobi:
“To further ensure professionalism in investigation with emphasis on child-friendly investigation and care, the IGP has summoned all DCs CID and Heads of Investigation Units to a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center, Jabi.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to upholding legal frameworks, ensuring fairness, and accountability, especially for vulnerable groups”.
