Reekado Banks Admits Leaving Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records Was Premature

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has openly admitted that leaving Don Jazzy and his record label, Mavin Records, was a premature decision.

Speaking on Echo Room with Teddy A, the Katapot crooner clarified that his exit wasn’t fueled by disagreement but by the natural expiration of his contract. According to him, he initially signed a three-year deal with Mavin Records but stayed for an additional two years without renegotiating.

When the time came, Reekado said he opted out without renewing, believing he could thrive on his own. However, he later realized the move was hasty.

“It wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and fixated on what I wanted to do. My contract had ended two years earlier, but I allowed it to ride. After five years, I thought I could do it on my own. But as soon as I jumped into the sea, I realized how premature it was.”

Reekado joined Mavin Records alongside Korede Bello and Di’Ja and went on to win Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2014 and Next Rated in 2015. Despite his success under Don Jazzy, he left in 2018 to establish his own imprint, Banks Music.

In addition to reflecting on his exit, the singer has been vocal about industry exploitation. Earlier this year, he warned young talents to be wary of a certain music executive he described as “demonic” and manipulative. He claimed that many promising acts who worked with the individual ended up frustrated or sidelined in their careers.
