Nollywood actress and senator’s wife Regina Daniels has finally responded to the massive backlash she received for her remarks on the nationwide protest.
Last week, Regina Daniels shared a video condemning violence during the protest and calling for peace. In another video on her Instagram, she urged every sector and citizen of Nigeria to contribute to making the country better, stating that one man alone cannot bear the responsibility.
Many criticized Regina for her comments, arguing that she, as the wife of a billionaire politician, couldn’t possibly understand the struggles of the masses. Critics felt her privileged position made her out of touch with the plight of everyday Nigerians.
Responding to the backlash, Regina explained on her Instagram page that her remarks were not intended to win love but to advocate for better pay for her workers. She highlighted the financial strains caused by insecurity and additional expenses, which have made it difficult for her to cater to her staff adequately.
You see what is happening in the North? Holding the Russian flags. Is that what we want? Mind you, whatever happens in the North can get to you. I preached against violence, and ignorant Nigerians said it was because I am privileged or opportune. Yes, the fact remains that I am privileged and opportune, but that doesn’t stop me from understanding that my nannies need to be paid extra or stop me from understanding that my gateman or cooks need to be well catered for because of insecurity and extra bills to be paid in Nigeria.
The point remains that Nigeria cannot be changed in a day and not by one man. I am not speaking for the government; neither am I speaking for you people to love me because I don’t need it. I am just stating that obvious fact, and that’s the truth. The earlier we all realised that this protest is turning to something else, the better for us, and that’s it.”
Regina’s reply elicited mixed reactions on social media. While some supported her stance, others felt she was still out of touch with the realities of the masses.
– One user, Mama Ariella, wrote: “Lol Regina rest! People are hungry and angry. You can’t flog someone and also tell them how to cry. Go back to showing off your wealth; you are better at that.”
– Another user, Fauzdoll, commented: “Omo shut up!! Go change your old man’s diapers.”
– Basheer Bobo added: “See small girl dey raise voice for adults.”
Similarly, actress Tonto Dikeh faced backlash for supporting President Tinubu and advising against the protest. She suggested that a representative group meet with the President to advocate on behalf of Nigerians, a stance that many did not agree with.
Some fans understood Regina’s point of view and appreciated her concern for her workers. A significant number of people criticized her for being out of touch and questioned her credibility in speaking on such issues given her privileged lifestyle.
