Renowned Geology Professor, Aminu Mosobalaje Oyawoye, Passes Away at 95

The African academic community undeniably mourns the loss of Professor Aminu Mosobalaje Oyawoye who was the first Professor of Geology on the continent. He peacefully passed away on Monday evening, May 22, at his residence in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State. The eminent Baba Adini of Kwara State succumbed to an age-related illness. He is consequently leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the field of geology.

Professor Oyawoye, lovingly known as Jamiu, led a distinguished life. It was marked by his exceptional contributions to the academic realm and his devotion to family. With two wives and ten children, he leaves behind a large and loving family. The funeral service and interment are scheduled to take place today, May 23, at 4 PM, as family, friends, and the academic community gather to bid farewell to a remarkable individual.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, further expressed his deep sorrow. He also described the demise of Prof. Oyawoye as a significant loss for the entire nation. The Governor equally praised him as one of Nigeria’s greatest luminaries and a source of pride for Kwara State. Prof. Oyawoye’s passing marks the end of an era characterized by undoubtedly extraordinary academic achievements, unwavering dedication to community service and exceptional statesmanship.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, Governor AbdulRazaq conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, the Olofa-In-Council, the Muslim community in Kwara State, for whom Prof. Oyawoye served as the esteemed Baba Adini, and the Oyawoye family.

The Governor emphasized that Prof. Oyawoye’s philanthropy, academic accomplishments, community service, leadership, and commitment to national development set him apart. He lauded the late Professor as an influential figure whose impact on the Offa people, Kwara State and Nigeria will be missed.

Governor AbdulRazaq acknowledged the significant contributions of Prof. Oyawoye as the father of Geology in Africa, a prominent Crown Prince of Offa and a statesman who employed his influence for the betterment of society. While recognizing the void created by his departure, the Governor prayed for Allah’s forgiveness for any shortcomings and beseeched that the late Professor be granted Al-jannah Firdaus. He also extended his prayers for strength and guidance to the grieving family during this difficult time.

The passing of Professor Aminu Mosobalaje Oyawoye leaves an amazing mark on the academic landscape of Africa. His legacy will always continue to inspire generations of geologists and scholars to come.
