Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged resident physicians to stay and collaborate with President Bola Tinubu’s government in the continuing efforts to save the country, particularly the health sector.
Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice-President’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday that Shettima made the request while speaking to the Nigerian Medical Association’s National Executive Committee.
The group, led by its newly elected President, Prof. Bala Audu, paid him a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa.
The Vice President also urged the physicians to avoid the temptation to flee without offering a glimpse of hope.
He assured them that Tinubu had their best interests at heart, stating, “The President has a lot of empathy for medical doctors who have chosen to stay at home despite lucrative offers abroad.”
Similarly, Shettima advised Nigerian physicians not to give up hope and to avoid the temptation to provide their services in foreign places.
“In President Tinubu, you have an ally who will stand by you at all times.
“President Bola Tinubu has Nigerian doctors at heart. He has a lot of empathy for our medical doctors who have opted to stay put at home, not for lack of offers,” he stated.
Shettima praised Nigerian physicians’ great advances and sacrifices in service to the nation, particularly in repositioning healthcare delivery.
He said:
“Let us stay back and salvage this nation together, this is our country and the greatest black nation on earth, and a promising nation that we need to invest in.
“The NMA is one of the most prestigious, preeminent associations in this country. We must commend you for the sacrifices you are making and for staying put in this nation.
“All hope is not lost because Nigerian doctors are making giant strides, recording milestones in the profession and, most importantly, making tremendous sacrifices to serve this nation.”
Shettima also advised the NMA to encourage new physicians to specialise in critical areas of medical practice while simultaneously monitoring the activities of quacks in the field.
