Resident Doctors’ Strike Strands Patients Nationwide

Millions of Nigerians relying on public healthcare services have been left stranded as the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) commenced a five-day warning strike.

The industrial action began on Friday following the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the federal government to address the association’s demands.

In a statement released via its official social media account, NARD’s Secretary-General, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku, confirmed the commencement of the strike.

The decision was reached during the association’s online National Executive Council meeting, which determined that the government had not adequately responded to their concerns by the September 10th deadline. The statement urged all members across medical institutions to comply with the strike directive fully.

The primary objectives of the industrial action are to press for better welfare packages, improved working conditions, and systemic reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.

NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundare, had previously outlined the key issues prompting the strike, which include persistent power shortages in medical facilities, the downgrading of membership certificates, inadequate remuneration, and overall poor working environments.

This nationwide warning strike coincides with an ongoing seven-day strike initiated by the Association of Resident Doctors under the Federal Capital Territory Administration, which began earlier in the week.

The concurrent industrial actions have significantly disrupted medical services across the country, creating acute challenges for patients seeking care in public health institutions. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between healthcare professionals and government authorities over the state of Nigeria’s health sector.
