The House of Representatives has called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of 18 individuals abducted by sea pirates in the Degema coastal area of Rivers State.
This appeal was made following a motion of urgent national importance presented by Cyril Hart, the representative for Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency.
Hart highlighted that the abduction occurred in March and expressed grave concern for the victims’ safety, noting that a pregnant woman is among those held captive.
During the plenary session, other lawmakers echoed the urgency of the situation.
The representative for Baruten/Ikalama Federal Constituency in Kwara State urged the Joint Task Force operating in the Niger Delta to take decisive action to address the security challenges in the region.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, directed the motion to the House Committees on Navy and Police for further legislative action.
The committees are expected to liaise with relevant security agencies to expedite the rescue of the abducted individuals.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing coastal communities in the Niger Delta, where sea piracy and kidnappings have become increasingly prevalent.
The House’s intervention reflects a growing concern over the safety of citizens in these areas and the need for enhanced security measures.
As the committees undertake their assignments, there is a collective hope that coordinated efforts between legislative bodies and security agencies will lead to the swift and safe return of the abducted individuals.
