The Nigeria Police Command in Rivers State has confirmed the killing of an unspecified number of suspected vandals attempting to sabotage a pipeline in the Rumuekpe-Aluu community.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, stating that the suspects died on the spot.
According to Adepoju, the operation was part of a joint effort with other security agencies to secure the state.
“The joint security forces successfully thwarted an attempt by miscreants to vandalize a pipeline, leading to the death of the vandals who sought to detonate it,” he said.
He explained that the timely response of security personnel prevented the detonation of explosives at the site in Ikwerre Local Government Area on March 16.
Following the success of the operation, security forces proceeded to Onelga LGA on March 19, where they intercepted another attempted bomb attack on the pipeline. Two suspects were arrested with four dynamites during the operation.
Adepoju added that police also detonated pods and other improvised explosive device (IED) components found at the scene.
