Nigerian Fuji singer Saheed Osupa has officially withdrawn his legal case against controversial singer Portable, following heartfelt pleas from several prominent Nigerians and after considering Portable’s difficult situation regarding his bail conditions.

Portable, whose real name is Habeeb Okikiola, was arrested by the Kwara State police over charges of criminal defamation, threats to life, incitement, character assassination, and public misconduct. He had allegedly used abusive language against Osupa, leading to legal action. Portable was remanded in custody after failing to meet bail conditions, which included a N1 million bail fee and two sureties, one of whom had to be the Chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). His case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025.

In an official statement, Saheed Osupa’s management clarified that the legal action was not personal but a necessary step to address what they considered a violation of intellectual property rights and a series of defamatory actions against the Fuji maestro. The team had hoped to set a precedent for discouraging unprofessional behavior and encouraging responsibility, especially among younger artists.

However, after being moved by pleas from several influential Nigerians, including Alhaji Ahmad Lawal, CEO of Lahmad Concepts, and Saheed Ibile, CEO of Harmony Holdings Ltd, among others, Osupa decided to withdraw the case. His decision was driven by compassion and a desire to offer Portable a chance for reflection and growth.

While accountability is important, mercy is equally vital,” Osupa’s team explained. They expressed hope that this decision would serve as a turning point in Portable’s life and career.

As part of the withdrawal agreement, Portable is required to meet the following conditions:

  • Retract his statement implying that Saheed Osupa should be held responsible if anything were to happen to him.
  • Confess to the falsehood of his previous public claim that he saw Osupa begging for forgiveness on his knees. Osupa’s team clarified that he had never interacted with Portable in that manner.
  • Sign an undertaking to refrain from cyberbullying, defamation, and character assassination moving forward.

Saheed Osupa’s team further stated that this decision was made with the hope that Portable would seize this opportunity for personal growth and transformation. They emphasized that, while leaders must be accountable, they must also extend mercy when appropriate.

This development follows an incident last month when Saheed Osupa filed a complaint over Portable’s song being removed from streaming platforms for copyright infringement. In retaliation, Portable had lashed out at Osupa, mocking his physical appearance and questioning his relevance in the music industry. However, Portable later issued a public apology, blaming his outburst on greed.
