The Nigerian police have taken Seun Kuti, the renowned Afrobeat singer, into custody and handcuffed him. They transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Panti for further investigation and possible detention.
This development was disclosed through a video shared on Twitter by Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate (AAC).
Seun Kuti’s arrest resulted from an order issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba. The order was a response to an altercation between Kuti and a police officer on the 3rd Mainland Bridge the previous week. The incident, which was captured on video, showed Kuti assaulting the officer who was in uniform.
However, Sowore clarified that Seun Kuti had fulfilled his promise to cooperate with the Nigerian Police investigation fully. Earlier in the day, Kuti had visited the Commissioner of Police in Lagos with his legal team.
In a Twitter post, Sowore wrote,
After visiting the @PoliceNG Commissioner in Lagos earlier today, @realseunkuti was arrested, handcuffed, and taken to SCIID in Panti by @PoliceNG officers apparently for further investigations and possible detention over his altercation with a police officer on the 3rd mainland bridge. @RealSeunKuti fulfilled his promise to cooperate fully with police investigations and accordingly visited the Commissioner in Lagos with his lawyers.”
